This is an excerpt from an article by Renee Phillips that will appear in the April 2010 issue of Art Calendar magazine.
Many artists I know have accumulated so much art work and face serious storage issues. They long to give their work good homes. Cassandra Tondro is an artist from California and founder of ARTconnectsLA who told me, “I am a prolific artist, and I want my work to be seen and appreciated rather than languish in storage.” She had donated some paintings to various charities including The Art Connection, an organization that places work permanently in community service organizations in the Boston area.“They have placed many of my paintings in wonderful public venues, however, shipping work to Boston is expensive and it was too far to attend the opening receptions.”
Her solution was to start her own organization ARTconnectsLA with three other women, who are all volunteers for the organization. ARTconnectsLA is a nonprofit agency that connects artists with community centers, health care facilities, nonprofit organizations, and social service agencies in the Los Angeles area that are in need of artwork for the public areas of their facilities. Cassandra says, “The agencies are thrilled to receive the artwork, and it truly brightens their facilities. We already have a waiting list of agencies wanting artwork.”
